'cantaloupe tonight...'

'my mom's got the car'. little dad joke for ya'. i've been playing along with the weekend hashtag project on instagram recently. this weekend the theme was ice cream and i had so much fun getting into the spirit of summer during winter down under. these final yummy images combine so many of my favourite things-  creative use/reuse of an object, super pretty colours together and a taste of nostalgia. thanks to my absolute favourite, my momma who served me vanilla ice cream in a cantaloupe bowl when i was little.

happy birthday to me!

it is technically my birthday in Canada today, so my real birthday. yesterday, it was november 7th in Australia, so that's when I celebrate it (though there weren't many celebrations). every year, it's as if the time difference eclipses the date where i am vs. the actual date of my birth and they cancel one another out. it almost feels as if i haven't had a real birthday in a weird way. HOWEVER, i have felt the love from far & wide and been very blessed to hear from loved ones all over the world - thank you.

i am most proud of my full moon cake i made for the occasion!!! the moon is totally my homegirl. ta da:

homemade: almond milk.

ice, cold almond milk is so refreshing and delicious. we make a litre every three days around here, so i thought that made us some sort of experts and that i should share with you how to make your own perfect drop.

what you need:
1 cup almonds
3 cups water
2-3 dates

what to do:
soak your almonds in enough water to cover them overnight.
drain this water and add fresh water to soak them again.
drain again after they have soaked and put almonds into blender.
add 3 cups fresh water and 2-3 dates for sweetness; blend.
once blended into a pulp, strain through a piece of muslin into a pot or bowl.
once thoroughly strained, refrigerate.

that's it!  *you could then save the almond meal to use as a flour substitute, but we have not had as much luck with this.

for some reason, i just love how we hang out the muslin on the back of the chair afterwards to dry. it reminds me of something my little grandma would have done.
