making connections: game of thrones.

i just love making little discoveries with images on the internet or with photos i may have taken and somewhere down the track connecting them to memories i've had or noticing that i was subconsciously inspired by something i had seen earlier. this latest unearthing is oh so exciting and one of the best examples of the small thrill of happenstance in my recent history. ready?! when we were in Morocco in late 2012, we went on a trip into the Sahara desert and one of our first stops was to the Aït Benhaddou Kasbah (castle). there was a set being built in front of it at the time and i've only just realised after watching the last episode of Game of Thrones series 3 two days ago (just in time for the first instalment of season 4) that they were building the gate that all of Khaleesi's freed slaves walk through in the final epic moments of that last episode. ahhh!  i was so excited to have figured this out!

*i remember arriving here and my eyes welling up a bit. i felt so overwhelmed about how far away from home we'ed come (that everything is new, safe/unsafe feeling) and looking onto this gigantic real life sand castle, that didn't seem real at all. and there were freakin' camels in the distance and donkeys inside the kasbah. it was a very raw, very special moment.

the inside was filled with room upon room of discarded objects that were left in the castle by previous owners, all covered in desert dust.

getting my Khaleesi on; checking out the view.

same, same?

i loved stumbling upon the similarities between this image from the Issey Miyake fall winter 2001/02 campaign by: Friedemann Hauss and my moroccan berber bride image by: Fiona Galbraith.

same, same?

i'm finding perfect pears pairs, again. how similar are these fruit lamps to my apple lamp from japan? and they are made by a japanese designer- hisakasu shimizu- to boot.

kindred spirits.

i love finding similarities in little things...especially when you make the connection ages after you have seen or even thought about the first item in the mix. to me, this solidifies that both have made a strong impression in the first place, if you are able to recall something that the second article you encounter down the track reminds you of. am i making sense?

this happens with me all the time and it gives me a little thrill. i noticed it recently in these two works; the first by my good friend and talented artist - Tiffany Wollman - and the second, a collection I stumbled upon by American artist - Cat Lauigan. do you see what i see?

both women have awesome websites as well: WO//MAN & cat.

inspire me.

i recently saw a parallel between a Paul Gauguin painting - Riders on the Beach, (1902) - and a photo of me by Fiona Galbraith. the similarities came to my attention after mine and Fiona's shoot, but the Gauguin work was saved on my desktop before, so...it's hard to know which came first- the chicken or the egg? like, did the Gauguin painting influence my styling choices in this shot or is it a mere case of happenstance? personally, i believe that everything we see/hear (experience) touches us in some way and most certainly colours are lives from there on in (plus, i do fancy myself a bit of a Fauve). regardless of how coincidental the colours and balance in these two works may or may not be, i do get a little thrill making connections like these.

the white swimsuit issue.

as you may know, i visit my pinterest account regularly for inspiration; be it interior styling, photography, fashion. i noticed recently that i had pinned a lot of images of classic movie stars on the beach in white bathing suits and then realised that i had many similar images of myself in my favourite white one-piece from a trip to idyllic fiji last year. it's amazing how similar some of the shots are without having even tried to copy them. looking back on these images has me eager to return to that paradise soon- it was something else!

leo and diane dillon.

back when i had my first attempt (aside from elementary school) at a collage, i used imagery from a secondhand book i was drawn to solely by the cover. i hastily cut it up before checking who had illustrated it. months later i found another work that i could of sworn was by the same artist as well, but you can never be sure. last night i figured out who was behind these beautiful works of art (and that i was right about it being by the same artist). the husband and wife team who are credited as Leo and Diane Dillon have been illustrating together since the late 50's. if you search images of their work on google, the breadth of beauty and talent is incredible.

these northern, snowy, aurora borealis filled, geese imagery ones are my favourites:

same same, but different

this blue-hued painting found on ursa major today totally reminds me of a rainbow painting my cute little sister did when she was teeny tiny that i've kept around forever:

same, same?

i think this might be the same artist that did the illustration on the front cover of the book i cut up for my first collage project...

remember? what do you think??

making connections.

the below post i did, made me think to share with you why i was inspired to do the drawing that i showed you in the first place. i studied this amazing south african artist William Kentridge at uni and based my drawing final on his work. although my perfume bottle was what i handed in, i did much experimentation beforehand and have always had a soft spot for this little robin.

check out some of William Kentridge's work, namely his videos...you will surely be impressed.

same, same, but different.

i like it when i find images around blogland that remind me of ones i have taken or of similar things that i have done...

like these spider's web photos which look a lot like the (bottom) image that i captured from this post:

 both above via newspaper taxi

or this bookcase reflection reminded me of a reverse version of my cousins and me in a bookshop in clear lake, manitoba.

and this boat reminds me a lot of the ones i made with my momma, no?
